The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum is any railfan’s paradise. This small attraction is located right near our Townsend Tennessee Cabin Rentals. Families with kids that love trains and history buffs love checking out this specialty museum devoted to preserving the history of the Little River Railroad and the lumber company of the same name that operated in town.
What Can You Expect to See? Visit the original Wall and Depot, which was moved to the site of the museum in 1983, and check out old time photographs, documents, antique tools and other interesting artifacts. The museum’s gift shop is housed inside a replica of an old post office, the Elkmont Post Office.
The outdoor exhibits always catch the eyes of visitors who come to the area to enjoy our quiet serenity. The museum houses a Shay 2147, the L&N Class NE “Little Woody” vintage caboose, two old flatcars, and a portable Frick steam engine. Also on the site is one of the original “setoff” logging houses, a wooden water tank from Walland and a an old time log loader. Other replicas and constructions are planned for the future.
